However, nothing else came along that is as interesting to me as hairstyling; I love my job and consider myself very lucky to have found such a great career.

I was lucky to have the experience of doing hair and make-up backstage at Pentacle Theatre in Salem for 12 years. This gives me an insight into historical periods and the realization that fashions are always recycled and brought out with a slightly different twist. This background in theatrical work showed me the difference a positive presentation can make and I would like to show you how that will work in your life.

I would like for you to come in and experience my hair cutting technique as my guest. Normally I charge $50 for a haircut and I have learned that a satisfied client is my true best advertising so I would like for you and your friends to come in and try one of my haircuts to see if you would like to have me be your stylist.

The greatest compliment I have ever received was from a film director up from LA who told me that I am the most non-invasive stylist he had ever worked with. I like for the time in my chair to be your time and would like for you to get the most out of it. That means that I want you to ask questions, offer feedback, show me pictures of styles that you like and never be afraid to offer me any criticism. I am about assisting you to get the great look that you want and deserve.

Long Hair is my specialty; I really enjoy working with long hair, particularly with the weave/colouring techniques that we use today. I will never suggest that you cut off your long hair; I will point out to you its benefits. There is a myth that women over thirty should have their hair short. This is exactly the opposite of what is true. Long hair makes you look younger and sexier, just ask Lynda Evans, Sophia Loren, Jane Fonda, Morgan Fairchild, Rosanna Arquette. If you follow the Hollywood model you can see that the mature actresses most always have long hair. Case in point is Sharon Stone in her recent remake of Basic Instinct 2. I have assisted hundreds of people to transition from short to long hairstyles; I am from the sixties and I prefer long hair.

The other thing that is cool about working with long hair is perms. I can put body or curls into your hair with no damage! I use special soft perm rods to avoid breakage in the hair and can create different looks based on how I wrap the perm rods. Perms actually have never gone out of style for the TV and Movie Stars; you just haven't noticed that Calista Flockhart perms her hair because they always set it in rollers or use a curling iron.

I can do very formal hair for a wedding or keep it sleek and simple with striking make-up. Because I worked in theatrical make-up for so many years, you will find that my make-up applications will truly sculpt some cheek-bones and your eyes will pop! I also learned colour analysis in the 80’s when it was popular so I can apply some make-up colours that you may never have thought of trying and will most likely pleasantly surprise you at how well the colors bring out your best features.

Thick Hair: Is your hair so thick that the hairdresser seems scared to see you? Never fear, I have mastered the art of working with thick hair through layering, texturizing and the use of appropriate products. Since I cut the hair dry I can see exactly how it is going to turn out before we get to the shampoo sink.

Curly Hair: There are a multitude of ways to deal with your incredible curls. First we have to look at the speed of the curl. Very tight curls are the fastest speed and looser waves are the slowest speed. Again, since I cut the hair dry I get more consistent results with no shrinkage; by cutting dry we can determine the exact length. One thing I have learned is that using a razor or thinning out curly hair is a mistake; it makes it more frizzy. I also have a lot of experience in using chemical hair relaxers, rollers and flat irons; I prefer to set the relaxed hair on velcro rollers and then wrap it or flat iron it after the rollers come out. I like to make your style easy for you to recreate at home. If you do want to wear it straight, I can teach you how to wrap your hair at night and keep it in for several days by using your head as the roller. Fashion is leaving straight hair behind—remember that curls are the next big thing!

Fine Hair: I have extremely fine straight hair that is thinning on top and I refer to my own hair as Beetle Legs. When I do my hair in the morning it looks like little beetles lying on their backs waving their legs in the air saying “catch us if you can…” Beetles can be so cruel…..because I have to work with my own thin fine hair all of the time I have become very good about making it look like a style. Bring me your fine thin hair and you won’t be disappointed.

Thinning Hair: I am currently using a hair growth product that works and I like the way it feels in my hair. I have used them since I was in my 40’s and wish that I would have started sooner. The sooner you start using a product when you start losing your hair, the better because those follicles are still active. I can recommend several different product lines according to your budget.

Hair Colouring--I charge $80 to cover grey and put in a few highlights, I charge $110 for 1 colour weaves, $125 for 2 colour weaves, $140 for three colours and $165 for covering grey and weaving in three colours. This is my favorite service to give. Because of my background with theatre and colour analysis, I get superior results. The placements of highlights are what it is all about. Additionally, sometimes we need to go in with lowlights because the hair is looking too blond or brassy from too many highlights. The great thing about colour is the ability to constantly update the tonal values to reflect how you are feeling about yourself. My feeling is that if your hair colour is right then you shouldn’t require any make-up; the hair colour should make your eyes pop. I enjoy working with all color requests, from subtle to extreme. Whether you just want a little “zazz” or you want deep orange or red underlaid beneath your natural color, I can do it!

Make-up: Many great make-up artists have said that if you use only one type of colour then let it be a lip colour. By applying a great lip colour the eyes will be enhanced. Notice I said a “great” lip colour; if you have questions about any of your lip colours please bring them in for your appointment time we can go over them to make sure they are enhancing your eyes. I also love to do make-up for special occasions and for photo work.

Permanent Waves. I charge $140 (more for very long hair) and I will make your perm look like natural curl. There are also now a variety of ways to wear your perm to get more mileage out of it. We now have non-thio perms and they don’t get dry and crunchy. Thanks to modern technology and chemistry, you CAN keep your permed hair long because I also do root perms on the re-growth only. I learned how to do perms in the 80’s and can do excellent spiral perms. It is also possible to create some mixed textures in perming for more specific results.

Hair Products, we call them liquid styling tools and they are definitely necessary if you want to achieve a great style. Lots of us buy too many products and don’t always know what they are for, probably our hidden desires to be chemists and we use our hair as the laboratory. I am currently using Pravana products and I love them. Pravana has combined the properties that are needed and puts them in one bottle, for example the Curl Enhancement Gel: this product has a sunscreen to protect your colour, encourages the hair to curl and has a light hold. The Curl Enhancement gel sells for $19.00 and performs three functions, with other companies it would take two or three products to get the same result and cost much more. Pravana is a light and strong product (compare the difference between aluminum and steel) and does not cause a great amount of build-up in the hair.

I try to make sure that I have great products available for you and since I left Aveda I have made an extensive search and Pravana delivers. I hear from a lot of clients that stylists are too pushy with products and while I don't want to have that interpretation placed upon me, it also helps me keep down the costs of hair services when you buy your products from me. I purposely don't take tips so that you have the money available to get the products that I carry; I would rather you take something great home with you than give me a tip. Also, I make money from the product sales so it is better than a tip because we both get something.

I also am using the Pravana hair colour which I love because I can create beautiful Blondes and Brunettes with absolutely NO RED! This is particularly great when I want to create a natural Blonde that looks like your real hair. I can also get the new Chocolate tones for the Brunettes with a pure gold base and no red. I have never seen the like of this colouring product and it is amazingly gentle on the hair; I can bleach black hair to blonde with very little damage.

For the Redheads out there I have something totally new and different. This also applies if you are doing your own colour at home because it is difficult to get a true red colour that won’t fade off or turn pink. Use Henna…..that’s right, henna. Apply the henna from the roots to the scalp and process as directed; I use Rainbow Henna which I bought at New Seasons for $7.00. After you rinse the henna out then apply your normal hair colour as you regularly would. The results are stunning because the henna will create an opaque red and the second colour will cover the grey plus mix beautifully with the henna. Be sure to use a henna that is lighter than the hair colour you are using, i.e., if you use a copper colour then use golden henna so it creates a lighter undertone that gives the colour some body.

Hair Conditioning: When you come in for your haircut I will put some coconut oil on your hair while I cut it. Coconut oil is amazing and you can leave it in your hair overnight if desired. Always apply it to dry hair and let it soak in; you can do a big treatment with it weekly for great results. Always use the UN-refined coconut oil; it is a little softer.

Men’s Haircuts: I am very good at cutting men's hair also and would really like to show you a little more style. Men's hair fashions are getting exciting with long hair coming back. I also do facial hair trimming and can recommend shapes that compliment your features.

I have also been very successful in helping people grow their hair out from short to long without requiring a headband, 5000 barrettes and a can of hairspray every morning. My belief is that when growing out your hair you should get a slightly longer style every eight weeks. That way the hair is growing two inches in eight weeks (on average) and we should try to only take a half inch trim. Then you will gain one and one half inches every eight weeks; it works really well. Also, the tip is ALWAYS included in the service price--I don't accept additional gratuities.
