Many students who want to go to college are the first person in their family to have that dream. Now as high school seniors many understand that they need some help in achieving their dream of going to college. The NELA Center for Student Success is a great place for those students to find that help. Our ability to help is increased or decreased by the number of volunteer mentors that we have to match students with. You can make a real difference in the life of a High School student by becoming their mentor. If you think that you would enjoy helping a young person achieve their dream of going to college, then come join us.

The NELA Center for Student Success is a non-profit community facility open to the public that offers free resources, information and counseling to students and their families so they can successfully plan and pay for higher education. One way that we help students is through the ASPIRE program. The ASPIRE program provides one-on-one mentoring to help students continue their educations beyond high school. Adult mentors meet with students one on one to help with variety of activities such as academic preparation, scholarship search, career exploration, college choice, and helping students fill out college and scholarship applications. The Center is open Monday through Friday 1:00pm to 7:00pm and Saturdays from 11:00am to 4:00pm. Most mentoring is done between 3:00pm to 7:00pm on week days. An application, background check, and short interview are required of all our volunteers. All volunteers are provided with training and support from the Center's staff. We are more than willing to sign off on community service/practicum hours and to provide references for reliable volunteers. Come join us and see how life changing being a mentor can be. It is based in Kisumu which is the third largest city in Kenya. Kisumu has a population of approximately 300,000 and is located on Lake Victoria almost on the Ugandan border. In Kisumu, there are many orphans who, without help, would have no future. Salem Orphanage is a home to about 130 orphans who lost their parents (usually to AIDS) and street children from the slums. There are primarily boys, due to the "preference" for girls as household labor help, and the difficulty for boys to stay at home if their mother marries someone other than their father. At Salem they are loved and cared for well, but the need is still so great.

Volunteer work: Volunteers' major duties include:
- Responsible for day-to-day coordination of the Home to ensure efficient performance of the organization operation
- Cooking for the children, washing the children's clothes and counseling
- Teaching the children sports, drama and theatre
- Farming and making "jikos" (cooking pots)
The volunteers will be working from Monday to Saturday. The number of hours will be decided by the Home management.
Special requirements: The Orphanage requires volunteers with counseling and teaching skills; preferably teachers in Math, English or Science and teachers for early childhood education and nursery schooling. However, we have an open policy and applicants with other ideas to share are also welcome to apply and will be considered.
Volunteers need to contribute/initiate ideas and by that would be promoting the growth of the Orphanage.

Each year, thousands of children in Washington and Multnomah Counties become wards of the Juvenile Court System, through no fault of their own, becasue they have been victims of abuse and neglect. CASA for Children is an independent non-for-profit orgainization that recruits, trains, and supports citizen volunteers who serve as Court Appointed Special Advocates, or Child Advocates.

Child Advocates are ordinary men and women from all walks of life, educational levels and ethnic backgrounds who volunteer to ensure the best interests of an abused or neglected child are addressed. When a Child Advocate is court-appointed to a case, he or she is responsible for gathering information, and coordinating as many elements as possible, in order to secure for each child a safe, permanent home as quickly as possible. Advocates visit children regularly, review records, interview parents and relatives, consult with teachers, neighbors, foster care providers, and work closely with community service providers. They advocate, in court and in the community, for the children and families to gain access to needed support and services.

Your role as a Child Advocate requires a strong dedication to children, some daytime flexibility, creativity in problem solving, the ability to be objective and above all, a desire to make a real difference in your community. If you have any questions or would like more information please call or email Benjamin at 503-988-4178 or benjamin.f.james@co.multnomah.or.us or visit our website at www.casahelpskids.org

Is your child showing signs of ADHD? Symptoms include trouble paying attention or following instructions, fidgeting, and interrupting.

Children with ADHD may also seem “on the go”, and have trouble waiting their turn. They may struggle to complete their homework or household chores, and seem forgetful and easily distracted. For children with ADHD, these behaviors are more noticeable and they interfere more in their day to day lives than other children the same age.

If your child is showing signs of ADHD, call Summit Research Network to find out more about a new research study for children ages 6-17 with ADHD. If your child qualifies, all study related care and investigational medication will be provided at no cost.

Over 72 million Americans have high blood pressure, that’s 1 in 3 adults. High blood pressure is known as the “silent killer” because one third of those with high blood pressure don’t even know they have it.

If you are overweight, stressed or get little exercise, you may be at risk for high blood pressure. High blood pressure increases your risk of diabetes, stroke or heart attack.

That’s why it is so important to find out if you have high blood pressure and to get help for it.

One option for you is a new research study. Summit Research Network is studying an investigational medication for high blood pressure that may help control this silent disease. If you qualify for this investigational medication research study, all office visits and study medication are provided at no cost to you.

The Convent is situated in the region of Abruzzo, centre of Italy, about 150 km away from Rome. It has been fully restored by the local institution Mountain Community and furnished following as much as possible the "static free" standards.
The project aims to bring new economic, tourist and especially cultural and spiritual movements in a quite isolated area. It deals with sustainable living, no waste, recycling and clever use of energies.
As every year international volunteer groups will spend some days at the ex Convento San Giorgio: a good chance to meet people from all over the world, to know a bit of Italian culture, getting in touch with permaculture and sustainable living; all this while staying in a Convent of the XVII century. The tasks of the participants change according to the period of the year, the season and the weather, but can be summarized in:
• maintenance of the structure (cleaning the Convent, painting walls, restoring windows,...)
• feeding the animals (chickens, ducks, sheep, goats, donkeys)
• working in the garden
There are two kinds of turtles that arrive on the beach, the Negra (Black Turtle) and the Golfina (Olive Riddle Turtle). The people involved in the project help by collecting eggs, burying them in the turtle camp, taking care of the baby turtles and doing some work collecting statistical information.
In this frame, a group of international volunteers will be involved in the project as members of the staff, which means that the volunteers will be very involved in the project and the work.
The goal of this project is to protect the turtles and to help run the conservation activities of the turtle protection program, promoting international cooperation and solidarity.
The main work consists in collecting turtle eggs, burying them again in a secure place, and transporting the baby turtles safely to the sea. This will be carried out at night since the turtles do not get out of the ocean during the day (because of their natural predators, it is safer for the turtles go out of the ocean in the dark). Together with the people from Colola Village, the volunteers will seek for the turtles and take care of the eggs and the baby turtles. Local people, who are very friendly, work with the group and explain them what to do.
Very motivated volunteers who really want to get involved in the work for protection of the turtles are needed for this project.
There are also some extra activities to be done with the local people in order to help improve the town such as setting names to the streets of the town or helping to arrange a multi-use playground for the children, and maybe some cleaning work, but this depends on the volunteers' initiative. The people of the town are very open to participate in other activities that the group of volunteers can propose, so any ideas will be welcome.
Language: The official language of the project is English. Some Spanish would be appreciated.
Location: Colola is a small town located on the Michoacan State coast, between Maruata and La Placita towns. It's a remote place that offers an excellent opportunity to be close to nature, on a virgin beach, with no tourism around. The closest city is Tecoman at 200 kilometers, but other villages such as La Placita that are closer (45 minutes by bus) can offer Internet connection.

For more details, please visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-mexico.htm or give us a call: 617-502-0400 (US); 604-628-7400 (Canada)

This project is part of CADIP's International Volunteer Program: www.cadip.org/workcamps.htm

french translator (portland)

Hello! My name is Laurel, and I am involved in an art residency in Paris, France. I am collaborating with Sandy.

Sandy will go to France and I will stay here in Portland. Every other day, for the first couple of weeks in December 2009, beginning December 7th, we will collaborate on a project with artists in both places that have developmental disabilities. We have a person in France working with us as a translator, but we do not have an english to french translator on our end here in Portland. We are wondering if there are any french speaking people (one or many more) that may be interested in working with us on a project that takes place in this time frame. It would be a commitment of about an hour every other day, not including the commute to N.E. Portland where the project will take place. Here is a description of the project:

Sandy will be landing in Paris with a translated video of the artists and farmers she works with in at Project Grow (http://www.growinginalldirections.org/people.html) in Portland, Oregon, all are adults with developmental disabilities.

This video is an introduction and some questions to start a conversation between Parisians of all abilities (but especially those with special needs, and those in the area of Betonsalon) and people in Portland, especially those at Project Grow.

She will show the video in Paris, and record the responses and questions of viewers with the aid of a translator there. The translator will use spoken translation from french to english, and the video will be sent back to Portland via the internet the same day.

Laurel will be in Portland at Project Grow, and she will go through the same process. This is where Laurel and Sandy need the help of an english to french translator. Laurel and the artists at Project Grow will send a response translated into french via video back to Sandy and so on and so forth. It is their goal to have a new video every other day.

The finished work will be in a group art show to be held in Portland in May, and also a venue for the same show in Paris.

People in the US with developmental and mental disabilities face many obstacles to full inclusion in our culture; mobility/transportation, segregation, and ignorance based on unfamiliarity. This situation results in an impoverishment of culture as it precludes integration of the contributions of people who are 'other abled.' This project is a small gesture towards correction. It intends to include and highlight contributions of the other abled as full participants in this cultural event, and also to give participants in both Paris and Portland an opportunity for vicarious travel, and virtual connections.

here is a link to the artist residency program in France: (http://www.betonsalon.net/spip.php?rubrique102)

If there is anyone in who would be interested in volunteering as a translator for this, they would be recognized as a collaborator, and would be helping out an amazing project involving really great people and their time and effort would be hugely appreciated. Please feel free to pass it on to anyone you think may be interested or respond yourself.

Best wishes and great thanks, Laurel and Sandy

At Windward we're weaving together practical, human-scale systems studying how to sustainably feed, clothe and fuel twenty people on a hundred acres. We're working out the arts and crafts needed to create a post-consumer, sustainability village because now is the time for radical change--and what could be more radical than creating a working model of a better way?

This is an opportunity to undertake either an internship or apprenticeship focused on renewable energy, sustainable food production and consensus-based community, and--if it's a good fit--to build that into a sustainable home and a right-livelihood.

In addition to traditional sustainability techniques such as organic gardening, earth-sheltered construction and the use of natural fibers, we're committed to developing cutting-edge systems such as integrated aquaponics, the conversion of forest waste into car fuel and representative consensus.

You're welcome to check out our approach to applied environmental research via our blog at http://www.windward.org/ .

If you have the vision, we have the tools; so if you dream of being part of a village of artists and artisans determined to create a sustainable life close to the land, we'd like to hear from you.

Online Tutors Needed (Portland Area)

Description:

TutorChatLive.org is currently recruiting volunteers to tutor online starting when we relaunch the site on January 18, 2010.

The main responsibility is tutoring students who request our free, live help. Our service is open and available to anyone that can access the website. Tutors work from the comfort of their own homes/offices on their computer and chat one-on-one with students in an instant messaging-type program. Tutors have many tools at their disposal such as the ability to link the student with online resources, draw on a virtual whiteboard, and transfer the chat to other available tutors online should they need further assistance.

Tutors can tutor in any subject area for which they have knowledge of, at least at the middle school/high school level. Math/science is of high demand, but not required.

We are very flexible with scheduling but request at minimum that tutors be online for two hours a week and commit to six months of tutoring with our service.

If you are a high school student in need of community service hours, we will gladly provide those.

Application:

Please apply online at our (soon to be redesigned) website at http://www.tutorchatlive.org.

Once we receive and review your application, you will be contacted to set up a phone meeting where we will discuss more about our program and give you the opportunity to ask questions.

Next, telephone orientations will take place late November/early December at which point we will teach tutors the ins and outs of the site and chat program for preparation for our launch on January 18, 2010.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at admin@tutorchatlive.org

We hope to hear from you soon!

Over the past year, 495 abused or neglected children entered the child welfare system in Clackamas County. Through no fault of their own, they are unable to live safely at home. One by one, court appointed special advocate (CASA) volunteers are standing up to ensure these children have the best possible chance at a bright future. There remain, however, 100 children who still need someone like you to make their voices heard. Please join us at one of our volunteer training orientations, held the first Wednesday of every month from 6:00 – 7:00 pm in the conference room of the Mountain View Professional Center (1001 Molalla Ave., Suite 203, Oregon City, 97045).
Seeking anyone in recovery from drug or alcohol addiction (for any period of time) for interviews to be used in writing a book. Interviews will be completely anonymous - no names will be used and facts will be changed to protect confidentiality/privacy. (I'm happy to put that in writing if you prefer.) It is my hope that the book, if published, will raise awareness about addiction and increase sensitivity by those who have never used to the struggle of addiction as well as to the power inherent in all of us to make positive changes in our lives.

I cannot afford to pay you for your time but would meet you somewhere like a Starbucks and pay for coffee while we talk. I anticipate interviews would take anywhere from half an hour to two hours depending on how much you are willing to share. I do intend to ask questions to try to find out people's stories... what your life was like growing up, when you first used and the circumstances, how you got clean and how long you've been clean, struggles/relapses in your recovery. Please be willing to share those kinds of details.

I would particularly like to find people who may have family members who would also be willing to share so that I can get a viewpoint from someone in your life who did not use but was affected by your addiction. (I would meet with them separately if at all possible.)
As every year international volunteer groups will spend some days at the ex Convento San Giorgio: a good chance to meet people from all over the world, to know a bit of Italian culture, getting in touch with permaculture and sustainable living; all this while staying in a Convent of the XVII century and discovering the beautiful Park of Sirente–Velino.
This is a special project in which international volunteers will help to collect olives in the field. The field is about 45 minutes away from the Convent (by car). During this period volunteers will be spending the day in the field. Work can be hard for some who are not used to it.

Help Portrait is a movement of photographers who are using their time, equipment and expertise to give back to those who are less fortunate this holiday season.

We will be having out first planning meeting November 16th at 6:00pm at El Presidente in Vancouver.

We will be needing volunteer
-Make up artists
-Hairstylists
-Greeters
-Photographers

One of the challenging parts of the Help Portrait initiative is finding the right people to photograph. It's not like we can just setup a mobile studio and expect people to find us.
One way we are trying to reach these folks is to partner with organizations that are already working with foster families, providing support to families, or helps the under privileged. For example, Union Mission, Hosea Williams, Families First or many others. Some are church-based and others are non-profit. We are looking to work with organizations that support: Displaced families, Woman of abuse, Foster Kids and Families Recovery, local hospitals, children's hospitals, churches, nursing homes, homeless shelters. The list of possibilities is endless. We are looking to give portraits to those who wouldn't otherwise get them. The lonely. The sick. The single mom and her kids. The displaced. The orphans. The homeless. The ones that the world doesn't see.

And of course we will accept donations to cover the price of printing off the photographs, coffee, and cookies.

Help out with the newest alternative to impaired driving! (PDX)

RideOn Portland is a 501(c)3 non profit focused on reducing the frequency of drinking and driving by providing an affordable designated driver program.

Here's how it works: An impaired driver calls RideOn. We dispatch 2 volunteers to the caller's location. One volunteer drives the caller home in his or her own vehicle, while the second volunteer follows in a RideOn vehicle. Once the ride is successfully completed, both volunteers whisk away to their next ride.
If there is downtime, volunteers may opt to do promotional work in the Southeast neighborhoods.

RideOn is open Friday and Saturday nights from 11pm - 3am. We are currently able to accommodate rides beginning in inner SE Portland and will drop off anywhere in Portland proper. All rides cost a flat fee of $10.
We are looking for dedicated volunteers to serve as drivers and dispatchers. We understand these hours are difficult, but it is clearly when the need is greatest.
Groups of friends and couples are encouraged to volunteer!

The Perks:

Free Coffee!
Receive 1 free ride per night of volunteering!
Drivers receive tips for their service!
Great resume builder!
Meet new people!
Get that warm, fuzzy, do-gooder feeling!
Fantastic stories!

In order to volunteer, you must be at least 21, have a valid drivers' license and a good driving record.
If you are interested in volunteering or learning more about this opportunity, please contact Kerry Hoeschen at RideOnPortland@gmail.com or check out our website at www.RideOnPortland.org

Thanks all! We hope to see you soon!
Help transport donated children's items such as clothing, diapers, birthday gifts, toys, and layettes for low-income families in the Tigard-Tualatin area. One responsible and reliable volunteer is needed to load and transport items in their own vehicle from a site by Washington Square Mall to be delivered to a site in Tigard. Volunteer must arrive between 10:30am-12:30pm on Thursday to pick-up donations at the site by Washington Square Mall, then deliver them to our site in Tigard on Thursday before 3pm. This would be perfect for a commuter who travels from Hillsboro to Tigard regularly.

The position will begin in September and run throughout the school year. We ask that the volunteer make this weekly commitment through the end of the 2009-2010 school year.
The Tigard-Tualatin Family Resource Center is a center dedicated to helping connect low-income families and individuals to available community resources as well as providing direct services. The items for transport are collected by a group of caring individuals who have gathered for this purpose and request items and money from a variety of sources in order to be able to provide needed items to families through agencies like our own.

Would you like to assist in an adult English Language Learner (ELL) classroom? If you have a couple hours once a week, we need your help. You can make a major difference in people’s lives, helping them learn English, opening up a world of opportunities to them.

Someone once said that the world is like a house and every language you learn opens another door to another room in the house. For most non-native English speakers living in the United States, acquisition of the language makes a huge difference in their lives; from helping them feel more confidant doing everyday tasks like going to the grocery store or answering the telephone to getting more involved with their children’s education and even to greatly improving their employment situation. There aren’t many English classes out there and what does exist is often too expensive for many of our clients.

We are looking for a volunteer to assist with our free classes once a week for an hour or two. Our volunteers are asked to make a commitment for one full quarter (three months) of teaching. This can be as formal or informal as you like. We have curriculum and materials for classes here at the center. However teachers own expertise, games, ideas and knowledge are welcome. Resources, students, and an inviting space are waiting for you. New classes start in January.

We are a small community resource center helping to connect mainly low-income families and individuals with available community resources as well as providing some direct services.

Thank you for your interest.

This HP Deskjet 2050 All-in-One Beta device will allow you to scan, copy and print documents and images.

We are looking for a wide range of computer users including novices and entry-level users. The evaluation period will last approximately four weeks beginning in mid November 2009 and ending in mid December 2009.

If selected to participate, we want you to have fun using the printer. You will be asked to spend a few hours per week using the HP supplied Deskjet to complete a series of tasks using different functions on the printer (e.g., scan, print, etc). You will also be asked to provide feedback on your experience via online survey forms. All the materials required to complete the tasks will be supplied as needed.

As part of the beta program, there will be 2 or 3 HP representatives who will deliver the printer to your home and who will also observe the setup and installation of the Deskjet printer.

(Web registration required, see below.) If you are accepted, you will be notified of your acceptance into this program within the next few weeks. If you are not selected, your information will be kept for future testing opportunities.
======================================
PROGRAM INFORMATION
======================================

The HP Deskjet printer you will be evaluating is not on the market today. The term "beta" is used to refer to a pre-release product still under development. As a result, this product has not completed HP's full quality assurance program and may have errors or defects. A beta test helps us discover unknown errors or defects and fix them before releasing the product. We have learned that HP customers may use their products in unanticipated ways; by placing beta printers in the homes/offices of users, HP is able to learn more about our customers.

During the testing period we request and encourage you to report to HP any and all problems, issues, suggestions, comments, ideas and/or questions regarding the product. You will be able to easily communicate with HP through your personal VOConline Feedback Center.

There are specific areas of interest where your feedback will be particularly valuable. These include:

·	Product installation issues
·	Error messages/defects
·	Product ease of use
·	Customer satisfaction levels
It is our intention to leave the product at your home for the duration of the test, but in the event that there are unexpected difficulties with the product or software, we could remove the product to determine the cause of the issue.

Hewlett-Packard will compensate those participants that complete all required To Do Items and Surveys and return the beta unit within 2-weeks of the end of the program, will be sent a $100 American Express gift card as a thank you for your help.

Volunteer Positions: Program Assistant/Mentor/ Power Hour Tutor Time Commitment: One hour per week
Schedule: Monday- Friday from 3pm-7pm

WHO WE ARE
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Washington provide diversified activities that meet the interests and needs of young people. Our core programs provide the opportunity for adults, peers and family members to interact with youths, enabling them to fulfill their potential and enhance their self esteem. In the past year, we were able serve more than 2000 members, grades 1st-12th, from all social backgrounds.

VOLUNTEERING
Volunteer opportunities at the Boys & Girls Club are plentiful and rewarding! By donating your time and influence, you will become a positive role model and impart a positive influence upon our members. While the program is first and foremost about benefiting the kids, we have found that our volunteers often get just as much out of the experience.

YOUTH MENTORING
Many of our members are in need of positive role models and would greatly benefit from the individual attention of a caring adult. As a Youth Mentor, you will be paired with a club member and meet with them for no less than one hour per week for a full school year.

TUTORING
Power Hour, our after school tutoring and homework-help program for 1st-5th graders, is always in need of capable and caring volunteers to help multiple students with their daily homework needs. For those members in need of more personalized educational assistance, one-on-one tutoring opportunities also exist. Power Hour runs Monday through Thursday from 4:00 to 6:00pm.

Give someone a little Holiday Cheer! (Portland)

Holiday Cheer is a special project of Metropolitan Family Service that coordinates hundreds of volunteers who deliver gift bags and provide companionship to more than 200 isolated older adults during the holiday season. This project remembers elderly and disabled community members who are without family and friends to share the love of the holiday season.

Holiday Cheer Volunteers help bring the winter holiday spirit into the homes of isolated older adults in NE and SE Portland. There are many opportunities within this seasonal volunteer project. Volunteers can help with: keeping track of donations and follow-up with donors; interviewing clients regarding the delivery time of bags and visiting times; helping on wrapping day to wrap presents and put the names and addresses on each bag for the recipients; and assisting with the deliveries and visits. Time commitment varies with assignment and occurs primarily in November and December. We will need hundreds of volunteer to help with gift wrapping, gift bag assembly, and gift bag delivery/friendly visiting with clients. You should like people, be a great listener, and have a good sense of humor!

For deliveries, volunteers must be at least 18 years of age unless accompanied by an adult. Couples, or parents with children, are welcome.

Project Linkage helps older adults remain independent in their own homes by linking them with volunteers who provide in-home support and transportation services. Project Linkage has served older adults and people with disabilities in the community since 1980.
Thus, by collecting eggs from the females and by taking care of them during the whole process of incubation up to the birth of the baby turtles, volunteers and local people contribute to the preservation of these species.
Through different activities throughout the year the "Sirenito Macho" project helps to prevent the turtle eggs being stolen, ensuring the turtles’ reproduction in permanence in the zone.
Can you help a forgotten child this holiday season?

Dear Friend,

Children of incarcerated or justice involved parents face many obstacles to leading a normal life. Among them is poverty. The holiday season can be a stressful time for children and families in the process of reunification. By giving to the Center for Family Success this holiday season, you can help make it a happy and healthy time for these children and their families.

We are looking for local businesses and community members to partner with us to provide our clients with the toys and clothes they dream of, as well as household items they desperately need. You can help several ways:

•	Hold a toy and/or household item drive. Ask employees and customers to bring in a new, unwrapped item to donate to the Center for Family Success (we can provide you with a list of popular items). We will distribute these items among our families.

•	Adopt a family as an individual, a business, or a group of friends. We have families of different sizes from which you or your group can choose the one you would like to adopt. When you have chosen your family, we will send you the family’s wish list.

•	Host a fundraiser! We gladly accept monetary donations to buy the items our families need. We will take care of all the shopping, wrapping and delivery.

Donations are needed no later than December 15th and we will happily arrange to pick up your donated items at your convenience.

If you would like more information on how your business can help, please contact us at 503-286-0600 or email us at info@childrensjusticealliance.org.

We thank you for your generosity.

Happy Holidays,

They are looking for Volunteers who are strong enough to collect furniture for their Rummage sales that they have 2X a year. The Rummage Sales are run by mostly elderly ladies that really cannot lift heavy things. Also they need someone to post their rummage sales on CL, Willamette Week Online, Oregon Live, etc... I am moving and I cannot post for them anymore.

One elderly lady I talked to didn't know what CraigsList was! I don't think any of them have computers or know how to use them. However I was told that they need to have SUCCESSFUL Rummage Sales or CASH Donations as St. Aidan's is in Financial trouble. And I'm afraid that this past Rummage Sale was not very good as they didn't have any furniture, and not many people came as they don't advertise except for a banner outside.

Come join our team of energetic volunteers as we engage Eva in play therapy. She sings, she plays with her toys, she absolutely loves being tickled... but she has profound developmental challenges and needs people with a tremendous amount of patience and encouragement to motivate her to be the best she can be. If you love kids and enjoy overcoming obstacles, you owe it to yourself to come and meet this adorable little girl. She will sit in your lap, sing a song with your name in it, and ride around the room on your shoulders - if you can learn to be the type of person that listens without judging, joins in without making demands, and motivates with praise and enthusiasm.

Think of our program as an advanced course in how to engage and inspire a child. You'll get to observe professionals and then try their techniques yourself; you'll get regular one-on-one coaching and feedback; you'll watch yourself and others on video and learn from the successes - and failures! Plus, you'll be part of a team of fun and dedicated people all working together to help make a difference in the life of this special child.

Research study for amputees with phantom limb pain (OHSU - Portland)

Have you had an amputation? Do you have phantom limb pain?

Researchers at OHSU are looking for people to be part of a research study investigating the effectiveness of mirror therapy, an experimental treatment for phantom limb pain. Phantom limb pain is pain that seems to come from the arm or leg that has been amputated. To participate, you must be 18-65 years old with phantom limb pain following amputation of all or part of an arm or leg on one side of the body only. Other eligibility criteria apply.

The study lasts for six months and requires one visit to OHSU for screening. At that visit, we will show you how to do mirror therapy at home and ask you to use it for a short time every day. We will send you questionnaires to fill out and mail back four times over the six-month period. You may continue your usual medications and treatments during the study.

There will be no cost to you for participating in this study. If you qualify, you will receive up to $90 for your participation. Please call 503-494-4351 for more information.

Discover the Akha culture and lifestyle while volunteering in Thailand

PRESERVING THE CULTURE OF THE HILL TRIBES IN NORTHERN THAILAND

                     November 9 - November 22, 2009
April 12 - April 25, 2010
May 10 - May 23, 2010

Volunteer project: The Akhas are part of the Golden Triangle hill-tribe cultures. Like in the neighbouring countries where they also live, they face in Thailand strong difficulties to be recognised and to value their particularities. The AFECT organisation contributes since 1981 to the defense of their rights, youth empowerment, elders support and cultural preservation and study. The volunteers will learn about their culture and problematic situation and contribute to AFECT projects and the daily life of the Akha villages.
The main objective of the project is cultural exchange between the volunteers and the local villagers but the participants of the project will also practically work in the communities doing different kinds of support and development works, like renovation of some community spaces or field works and farming with the villagers. The exact nature of the work will depend on the needs of the village at the time of the project.
Study theme: The volunteers will learn about the AFECT campaigns and discover the Akha culture, lifestyle, particularities and problematic situation in Thailand from the inside and from Akha people themselves. An introduction to Akha and Thai language is foreseen.
Special requirements: No special profile is required. Nature lovers, ethnology fans and human rights activists will be particularly interested in this project. Adaptability is required from the participants.
Age range: 18 and over
Project language: English
Leisure time: The free time will be organised according to the weather and the actuality of the communities but in general it will be essentially spent in the community. The volunteers will have the chance to learn about Akha cuisine, massage and specific handicraft. They might have the opportunity to attend traditional Akha ceremonies and events (like the principal Harvest celebration in March). If the weather permits it, trekking in the hills can also be foreseen.
New years Eve, according to the Thai Buddhist calendar takes place in April. The volunteers in the April group will have the great chance to attend the ceremonies and festivities in the village with the local population.
Accommodation: The volunteers will be hosted by the villagers in the communities where they will work. The conditions will be the same as for the Akhas themselves: very basic compared to urban Thailand, but very authentic. Do not expect occidental luxuries in any case.
Location: The project will be held in the Chiang Rai region (North-west Thailand) and the surrounding mountains all the way to the Golden Triangle borders, maybe one of the most beautiful locations in Thailand! The influence of the hill tribes and nearby Burma, Laos and China shapes the culture here.
