General Position Summary:

Implement seasonal and long range PR strategies and plans, which will support global brand marketing goals of increasing awareness and relevance of Columbia brand among target consumer groups, and positioning Columbia as the leading innovative outdoor brand.

This position requires the ability to manage inception through delivery of PR programs and projects and act as the department’s lead editor & copy proof reader.

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:

Work with Sr. Mgr of PR and Promotions and team to develop PR strategies and plans.

Manage positive relationships with a variety of media including business, local, and vertical and across media types including blogs, online, print and broadcast. Includes in-person briefings, event attendance, story/product pitching and responding to editor inquiries.

Manage PR communications, media pitching, interviews, research and editing of material.

Develop press releases, pitch stories and marketing collateral to high standard consistent with company messaging and editorial guidelines.

Assist with company blog and company representation on other social media outlets.

Assist in the development and coordination of media tours, press events, press briefings, media training and trade shows.

Manage and attend media related events. Serve as company spokesperson on occasion.

Assist with publicizing high-profile media coverage on company website and internal company communication outlets.

Supervise PR team members for contributions to PR projects.


Specific Job Skills:
• Possess extensive knowledge of the public relations function, and extensive knowledge of media relations principles and procedures.

• Demonstrated success in implementing media campaigns (incl. social media).


• Demonstrated success in securing media coverage in a variety of outlet types.

• Demonstrated track record of developing successful working relationships with reporters and bloggers (references required).

• Exceptional ability to read, write, and speak English. Exceptional writing skills; knowledge of and experience with journalistic style writing.

• Must have excellent communication skills.

• Ability to be creative and innovative, especially in written communications.

• Possess good organizational skills and attention to detail.

• Mental ability to conduct interpersonal interactions with the media, members of the public and company personnel.

• Ability to represent the company in a manner that enhances its image. Ability to solve problems and operate independently and with discretion, and work effectively under pressure.


Education and/or Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and or experience specializing in public relations, journalism, communications or related field.

• Requires at least 6 years public relations experience. This experience to include demonstrated supervisory role.

• Experience working in Outdoor Industry required, and specific experience working with fishing, hunting and golf media preferred.

Job Conditions:

Job requires travel in the U.S. and possibly overseas. Job may require hours that exceed 8 hours per day and/or 40 hours per week and occasional weekends to complete priority projects. Job pressure exists in the balancing of a variety of projects, numerous simultaneous deadlines.
