San Clemente Island goats are:
• Beautiful, entertaining, enjoyable, medium-sized goat. We raised our children with them.
• Useful for brush control e.g. blackberries, milk, meat, cart rides. They have complemented our farm in all these ways at different times.
• A unique, North-American heritage breed, originally from Spain, that were feral on the islands off California for hundreds of years until they were removed by the US Navy in the 1980s. We enjoy their excellent mothering abilities; their independent but timid natures; their unique facial strips, color patterns and primitive look especially the bucks’ magnificent horns and majestic manes (and lack of scent glands other bucks have).
• A critically endangered breed on the Livestock Conservancy Conservation Priority List and needing conservation. We have kept them for 27 years and many generations and are the original SCI goat breeders in Oregon. We work with the few breeders across the country preserving several rare lines and occasionally moving breeding stock. Our purebred goats are registered to preserve their ancestry and to allow making good breeding decisions.
We can help you start your own herd with our unrelated breeding pairs or other combination out of old foundational lines. Tell us about your farm and your goals and we’ll see what goats are available to sell so you join this adventure. Does are typically $400 or 450 and bucks, $300.
