Our 1913 Brooklyn neighborhood bungalow is available starting February 1, 2026. The beautiful two bedroom, one bath bungalow has a large basement for laundry and storage and also includes a small studio accessory dwelling unit - a garage converted into a tiny house that is fully separate from the main house but shares the small backyard. So, overall, the property includes 3 beds and 2 baths but in two separate structures.
We are a couple who bought the house in 2009, have been slowly updating and remodelling, and moved to Eugene for grad school and a job in 2015. We operate in a low-key manner but take pride in our property and try to be the best landlords that we can.
Rent is $3200 plus utilities (Electric, Gas, Water, Cable/Internet run about $200-$250 per month). Total to move in would be first month's rent and a $1600 refundable security deposit - $4,800.
We plan to have an open house on Saturday, January 10th, 2026 and will start accepting applications the next day. If you are interested, read more details below and please respond by email through craigslist to schedule a time to visit on the 10th. Because of the number of responses we usually get, we don't have a lot of time to respond to very detailed questions and prefer to answer questions after you've viewed the house at the open house.
We will also check references of the successful applicant, including most recent landlord and employer (or other income verification) but that will be asked for in the application.
PROPERTY DESCRIPTION
The Main House
Two-bed, one-bath bungalow with front porch, basement (with washer/dryer), and big rooms all around. South-facing bedroom has big closet and three big windows. North-facing bedroom looks onto backyard with three big windows and is quieter. The bathroom is updated with a big sink, tall showerhead, and water efficient toilet. The kitchen has a big fridge and dishwasher and a gas stove. Big dining and living rooms with classic craftsman features. The basement has plenty of room for storage and one "finished" room with a window that could be an art room or something (not an official bedroom). All appliances are resource efficient and the place has newer pipes, furnace, electric, and roof.
The front yard has a raised vegetable bed, a fig tree, lots of lavender, and blueberries. We will continue to help maintain the yard but rarely since we live out of town. You're free to garden! The back yard is small, but has a shady fir tree, privacy fence, and stone patio. The back yard is shared with the tiny house. The front porch (south-facing) is sweet and hosts a view of Mt. Hood if you crane your neck.
Tiny House:
We converted the garage into a tiny house, which is included with the rental. It is a completely separate structure with no access to the big house and could be used as an office, guest suite, or another space for someone in your household (teenage kid?). It’s a studio with a full kitchenette and bathroom. Outdoor areas are designed to be shared but the tiny house has its own front porch.
The Location
Brooklyn is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Portland and is experiencing a commercial resurgence. Brooklyn is still largely residential, but there are a few awesome businesses around - the new Food cart pod at Holgate and Mcgloughlin, a coffee shop two blocks away, the Aladdin Theater, 24-hour Hot Cake House, Pok Pok, Portland Futsal facility, Bushwacker Cider, and True Brew Coffee to name a few. The house is one block away from Hounddogs Bar (cheap, t.v. for sports games, where everybody knows your name) and a bodega (local beer runs, also milk and ice cream). It's also pretty close to SE Division (food, drink - so many restaurants), and the Clinton business area and New Seasons. There is a QFC in Sellwood - about 3/4 of a mile away. More retail and apartments are being built in the area and it is an up-and-coming neighborhood.
There are two major parks in the neighborhood - both are about 8 minutes away if you're walking. One has tennis courts and the other has a slip and slide every summer. The house is one block from a newer 24-hour fitness. Even though the house is close to McGloughlin and Holgate streets, it is quiet. Oaks Bottom Nature Reserve is 1/4 mile away. I run from the house and am in the reserve in about 2 minutes where trails lead you along the river and through the forest. It is a major bonus.
Brooklyn is really close to downtown. Bicycle commuting to PSU takes less than 20 minutes and is done mostly on neighborhood streets and along the river. Driving will get you downtown in 7 minutes. The Orange Line of the MAX is around the corner with the closest stop 3 blocks away! The Orange line offers direct access to OMSI and Central Eastside, OHSU tram, South Waterfront, PSU, and downtown. Four busses (19, 31, 32, 33) stop within three blocks. More (17, 70) within 6 blocks.
