Although part of the Shirvan weaving area, the rugs woven in the the coastal district around the Apsheron Peninsula of the Caspian Sea are grouped together under the generic heading of Baku. The three principal types are Baku, Khila and Surahani. This Surahani rug has a single large vertical medallion with three octagon medallions. This design is considered to be a highly stylized rendering of the Safavid garden composition which is also found on later Persian and village trial rugs. This rug can easily be mistaken to be Kazak Sewan, however, the motifs in the white field of the large vertical medallion are of Surahani origin. The colors used are few and highly contrasting, dominated by pale and dark reds, intense blue, white and bottle green. This collectable, beautifully preserved tribal rug contains many of the archetypical motifs central to the weavers of the area. All wool, excellent antique condition. Even pile and original selvages and secured ends. Free shipping.
