Opening largest enough to accommodate modern fireplace insert.
The antique shop my family bought it from, specialized in architectural salvage in the Bay Area in the 80s, gutting Victorians in England as well as the Bay. This particular mantel was said to have come from England. It has been a treasure in our home since.
There is some remaining indication it was removed from it's original home on the sides of the legs, some plaster or mortar still attached.
Beautiful wood carved floral motif & on the backside you can see how the craftsman joined all the pieces together like a puzzle. They really don't make them like they used to!
There is some markings on the 2 side front panels that may have indicated at one point a mirror or something had been glued there, no residue, etc left, but there is 4 spots in the corners that remain on both sides, mote visibly on the left side, see detail photos. We have never restained this piece or tried to remove them.
It's a solid, sturdy, timeless piece sure to inspire awe & old world beauty to any home.
🌿 I am selling other antique furniture, open to discounts if buying more than one piece of furniture. Thanks for looking!
