The Gazelle Cabby is a real all rounder. We carried two kids, groceries, lawn tools and occasionally a second adult.
The bike came as a manual, but the good folks at Nomad Cycles did a full electric conversion. They did a terrific job and despite being large the bike cruises easily, even under load. The bike has a throttle, which is awesome for starting and getting up hills. Since the electric conversion I’ve put 1500 miles on the bike, but it has a lot of life left in it.
The rain cover fully encapsulates the bucket and the kids road comfortably even in the wet winter.
Downside to the bike—it has drum brakes, which while powerful, aren’t as responsive as disc brakes and take a little getting used to.
I just had the bike given a full tune up at Nomad—$500 worth of new handle grips, break levers, tires, tubes, chain and some custom manufactured chain tensioners.
The bike has one mechanical project to fix—the internal gearing needs work, which Nomad can do. Offering the bike at a discount from what I think it’s worth ($3k+) because it needs that work.
Electric motor and battery:
Installed in 2023
Befang middrive motor
1000 watt power
Class 3 legal in Oregon
14 amp hour battery, 52 volt
Range varies by load, terrain and how much you use the throttle but I regularly got 25 miles between charging.
The battery has USB port on the side to plug in a phone while using maps, which is handy for heavy use.
