2000D-JFK-Half-Dollar. November 2023 marks 60 years since the tragic assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. Many don’t know that the design on the obverse of these Half Dollars released to honor JFK was hand-picked by the president’s wife Jackie Kennedy! The initial Kennedy Half Dollar was struck in highly pure 90% fine silver in 1964, then the Mint reduced the silver content to 40% in 1965 in both its Proof and Mint sets—where it stayed until 1971, when the Mint again changed the content to clad.
