Position title: Medical Interpreter

Status/hours: Non-exempt, full time (40 hours per week)

Salary: Dependent upon qualifications and experience

Reports to: Director of Operations


Medical Interpretation

  • Assure written translation and verbal interpretation for Spanish speaking patients as needed; update bilingual English and Spanish information for clients referral documents; ensure delegation of tasks for timely completion
  • Oversee facilitation of interpretation needs for clinic patients and providers seek solutions to filling interpreting needs in a way that promotes ease of access for patients and is considerate of cost for clinic
  • Maintain a working knowledge of laws and policies of medical interpretation work with clinic manager to ensure compliance of clinic in provision of these services
  • Advocate on behalf of population-specific culturally competent care
  • Engage in crisis intervention and client advocacy
  • Attend staff meetings and clinic trainings
  • Attend trainings provided by Wallace Medical

Patient/Customer Service

  • Maintain an environment conducive to patient comfort and confidentiality
  • Assist new patients with registration process
  • Provide referrals for clients to various community agencies

Medical Information Management

  • Assist providers and clinical staff with patient follow-up

Medical Office Coordination

  • Assist with training of front office staff and/or volunteers
  • Be an engaged team member of a Patient Centered Primary Care Medical Home care team
  • Supports medical records and referral department with administrative duties
  • Medical interpretation Spanish/English as assigned
  • Assist with OHP enrollment and screening as needed
  • Other administrative duties as assigned

Wallace Team Member

  • Create new patient forms as needed
  • Update policies and procedures as needed
  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality
  • Work as member of the front desk team
  • Provide assistance to all medical personnel as required
  • Maintain positive working relationship with all staff in all departments
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement activities according to organizational goals
  • Comply with all applicable laws and fully cooperate with the Wallace compliance program


  • Bilingual Spanish/English required
  • Must have Oregon Qualified Health Care Interpreter status, or ability to obtain within 90 days of beginning position
  • Prior experience as a medical interpreter/translator
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • At least a year of experience in a medical office setting or two years of work experience in a high volume direct public contact position
  • Ability to handle crisis situations & multiple tasks in high patient volume environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong administrative skills with high accuracy and attention to detail
  • Able to work with people from diverse ethnic, cultural, gender, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Able to work both independently and as a member of a team
  • Ability to quickly adapt to new technology and software, including Electronic Health Record systems
  • Solid computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office


Duties are performed primarily in an office and clinic environment. Some evening or weekend hours may be required.


Ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Requires ability to sit long periods of time, stand, lift, carry, walk, read fine print, and communicate in person, in writing, by telephone and electronically.
