This kit includes the trap, a thing of attractant, and also a cord that I added that is a 12” measured piece I cut off of a new clothes line as it was the thickest cordage I could find that will still fit through the hole since when it is set up with the attractant in it and half full of water it has a hefty weight to it for something not that big so needs a good sturdy cord.
Unlike fly paper it’s reusable. Like fly paper it’s non-toxic but with being reusable even more environmentally friendly. It’s for outdoor use only, if you are looking for something that can also be used indoors look at my other 2 types of fly traps.
How it works is the flies are attracted by the horrible smell of the attractant and so go inside and while “they can get in they can’t get out” so they have to constantly either fly around in inside or grab onto the walls and so they soon get too tired to do either of those things anymore and fall into the water where they drown.
The attractant smells like a combination of poop and rotten meat and so the flies smell that and say “I want to eat some of that and/or deposit my children in it!” and then they go in and at first they feel like they discover a fly Disneyland but since they can’t get out they soon discovered what they really found was a fly hell.
You can think of their company name of “Rescue!” of “it makes flies in need of a “rescue!” but luckily for humankind and the animals we care about a rescue will never come and so they die in there.
Soon inside of this trap set up at any time of the year except late fall, winter, and early spring it will look like a happening party in there where only flies are invited with any new fly that comes along eager to figure out how to get inside so he can “join the gang” as beneficial insects like ladybugs and honeybees never go inside as there’s “nothing there for them that interests them” because “they can’t eat stink so aren’t attracted to stink.” Only flies feel “this place is buzzing” and so want to go inside to “see what all of the buzz is about.”
The attractant can be purchased alone online and in walk-in stores but while it can be thought of as what is “scientifically proven to best attract flies in the form of a powder that water just needs to be added to it” I have found anything that smells disgusting –– or soon will smell disgusting after being left in it for a bit –– mixed with water attracts flies just fine such as dog diarrhea or little bits of expired meat that soon turn into little bits of rotten meat. And of course anything that smells disgusting that consists of organic matter NOT stuff that consists of chemicals. You also might be able to reuse most of the attractant if after the water fills up with flies you run the water through an old strainer you never-will-use-for-food-again or fish net or bug net that you then thoroughly wash and then through the dead flies in the garbage. Don’t have dog diarrhea or expired meat? No problem, just drain a can of tuna or 2 from food you are making for yourself that calls for tuna and add water and it will soon go from a “fresh fish smell that only a little bit attracts flies” to a “rotten fish smell that attracts flies in a big way.” The company that makes these either didn’t realize you could easily make your own attractant or did realize it and figured correctly that they would sell more attractant if they omitted that information but if they realized it and didn’t say then I think it was an error in their business strategy because while they would sell less attractant they would sell more traps overall boosting sales of their products.
And as to the question “since some of the dead flies float, and if little bits of expired meat are used as attractant after the included attractant gets used up and some of them float, can’t the flies sometimes use them as life preservers?” And the answer is: “Yes they can, but it’s not like they are going to be picked up by the Coast Guard saving their life they are still stuck in there no matter what so even if the ‘life preserver effect’ causes them to not drown right away and so they instead die of old age in 2 days and then a week after they first grasped the life preserver they are still equally dead in there so for benefiting humankind and the animals we care about it made zero difference.” Because “any fly trapped in there, since he can’t get out, regardless if he falls in the water and drowns right away or dies of old age in there is equally never a problem for humankind or the animals we care about again as he never can cause problems himself anymore or work to reproduce and make more flies that then cause problems anymore, because he is now trapped in this little-mini universe that is sealed off from the greater universe so it’s as if he fell into a different dimension that he can’t come back from and in this different dimension he can’t do any harm to humans and the animals we care about within it either.”
If you are thinking of not using it right away or giving it as a gift then know even though it stinks bad when set up when not set up with the attractant in it’s sealed pouch that is in turn sealed in the trap itself there is zero smell.
It uses no poison as it not only would not be environmentally friendly but it also would be pointless because “regardless if a fly dies in seconds in poison or drowns in minutes in water at the end of the day he is equally dead.”
Luckily for us and the animals we care about, flies have no way to speak to other flies to say “stay the hell away! It’s a trap!” to warn the other flies in the area after they found out it was too late for them as with flies their policy with danger always seems to be “every fly for themselves!” with no sort of warning or trying to help their comrades of any kind.
Sometimes it takes them a minute to figure out how to get in so they are hanging out on top of the trap but even that’s progress as they are now away from people and stuff they can eat or drink and they soon will be inside and once inside they will stay there.
My biggest criticisms of the design of this trap is the fill line is hard to find as it does not go around the whole thing like it should but instead just around a tiny percentage of it (to find it look at the front and not the inside then look immediately to the left at the middle and you will see it) and the trap should be clear in an even large number of areas to enable you to see the flies and also help attract more flies looking for a mate or figuring “something in there must be good with all of those other flies in there so I’m going to try and get in there too” but it still is overall a well designed trap. And they don’t say this in the instructions but if you first put it out at the start of fly season (so when the weather starts hitting the mid 80s or warmer for the first time that year) water will evaporate before even 30 days to be only about 3/4 full of water below the fill line so then you have to add more back to the fill line with now the easiest point of putting water in being in through the funnel so that way the trap can just stay in place. And if there is no rain or not much rain the effect rain has on it is if there was a quarter inch of rain in a day the water does not go up by a quarter of an inch as the funnel isn’t for 100% of the top and plus evaporation is constantly happening so the water level goes up but by a lot less than a quarter of an inch.
It says “fly trap” big on one side only so it looks best to hang it with that side pointing towards people are most likely to see it helping to let them know what it is.
For a fly trap or fly paper if you want to save money set it up on the first warm day after winter (so around mid spring most years) then it will be up “throughout all of fly season with it empty and just put up right at the start of it to maximize how many flies it gets.”
Flies are more than just annoying, they also spread disease, and a fly trap is an environmentally friendly way to keep their numbers down.

It works like fly paper by attracting flies not by smell (as it’s odorless) but by it looking like an appealing place for a fly to land and investigate it and then kills them also not by poison (as it does not use poison) but instead by simply causing the flies to have to remain stuck there the flies soon die of dehydration or starvation or old age (their life spans are very short) depending on which of the 3 “gets them first.” And since it isn’t as tall as fully unrolled fly paper can be mounted to more than just really tall ceilings without risking getting caught in someone’s hair. Just place one in the top of an empty bottle with little bits of banana or apple or some other type of fruit and the fruit flies go in and then they can’t get out. Funnels only, no bottles included. It says referring to bottles “one size fits all” on the package but it won’t fit in “wide mouth” bottles like Gatorade or Powerade bottles but all other types of bottles it will fit even tiny bottled water openings.
