Here are 6 great options for piano teachers for your kids:

1. Elaini (NE Portland)
Elaini began taking piano lessons at the age of 7 and hasn’t yet stopped enjoying the gift of music. Graduating at 16 she kept pursuing the Oregon Music Teacher’s Association requirements and passed the highest level, level X, in the midst of difficult health struggles. She also competed in festivals for three years receiving superior scores each year. Playing the piano is a joy for Elaini and something that she finds deeply satisfying. She is excited about passing on the treasure of music to others. When not studying for her BA in Psychology she enjoys reading, spending time with friends and family, and raising money for orphans in India. Elaini teaches Classical and Contemporary piano.

2. Max (SE Portland)
Max graduated with a B.A. in Music from Lewis & Clark College in 2018, where he spent his time honing his skills in guitar and piano performance, writing about the anthropology of music, and performing in a variety of ensembles. Beyond academic studies, he has worked extensively as a music educator at institutions such as the Oregon Music Academy, Lewis & Clark College, and as a private instructor, and has played at major commercial and non-commercial venues across the country. He works with students of all ages and of many stylistic orientations as an instructor in guitar (namely, classical and rock), piano, banjo, synthesizer, music theory/composition, and music production.

3. Michelle (Sellwood)
Hi. I’m Michelle, and I have loved music as long as I can remember. I learned the piano and flute in grade school, and then I began to pursue music seriously in high school. I took guitar and voice lessons and became passionate about song-writing. During high school I was accepted to The Interlochen Center for the Arts summer singer-songwriter workshop, did gigs at local venues, and also performed one of my own songs at my high school graduation. During college music was never far from my mind and heart and I took private voice lessons while pursuing a degree in Sociology and Anthropology from Lewis and Clark College in Portland. I have worked extensively with students of all ages as a reading tutor and have learned patience and the joy of seeing students succeed. For me, music has been a place of refuge and a source of inspiration. It helps to ground me in what can sometimes be a confusing and overwhelming world. I believe that it can be the point of connection and inspiration that helps young students to persevere in school and I would like to bring this kind of inspiration and connection to my music students. I currently teach piano, guitar, and voice.

4. Charles (NW Portland)
Charles is an accomplished musician who performs, composes, produces, and engineers music. He has been intense and passionate about music since early childhood. At the age of 6 he began his musical journey by learning piano and being influenced by gospel and jazz music. Later he expanded into the world of drums and percussion. Moving into his teens Charles was starting to engaged in many musical activities and performed in many groups in high school. He played in (by audition only) the All Northwest jazz band and was a featured soloist in the group on vibraphone. Also, he played in the All State Concert Bands for two years. After high school Charles studied and performed around the Inland Northwest until the late 90’s when Charles was accepted to the Berklee College of Music on scholarship and moved to Boston. While at Berklee Charles was awarded the Elvin Jones Scholarship and in May of 2000 Charles graduated “Cum Laude” from the Berklee College of Music.

5. Sara (Downtown Portland)
Sara has been performing and teaching music for a decade. A native to Florida, she received her Bachelor’s of Music Performance from University of North Florida, her Master’s of Arts from University of Central Florida, and most recently completed her Performer’s Certificate from Northern Illinois University. As an orchestral bassist, she has performed with numerous orchestras across the nation including: Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Lake Forest Symphony Orchestra. Sara coaches her students to win competitions and get accepted into all-county and all-state orchestras. Igniting confidence through instruction, Sara believes music education should be attainable to all and directly reflects that in her teaching method. She is excited to be in Portland and can’t wait to make a difference through music! Sara teaches upright bass, bass guitar, guitar, piano, and cello.

6. Hana (Sellwood)
In May, Hana graduated from Lewis & Clark College with a B.A. in Piano Performance. Along with piano, she studied voice, composition, music theory, and orchestration. In addition to studying voice and piano privately, she participated in Capella Nova Choir as a soprano section leader. Her love of musical ensembles inspired her to join percussion ensemble, orchestra, and chamber groups as a pianist/marimbist. She accompanied voice students on piano, and became adept at sight-reading, improvising, and performing other styles such as musical theatre and pop. In 2016, she was a piano coach and orchestra assistant at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, where she taught young musicians to pursue their passions. Her main teaching background is in piano and voice, but also teaches cello, guitar, and ukulele.
