Copyediting - fiction or nonfiction, no job too small or too big. (Portland)

I'm a freelance copyeditor. I work on typos, tangles, consistency problems, distracting double meanings, and anything that could get in the way of your writing having the effect that you want. Novels, short stories, nonfiction, white papers, term papers, miscellaneous... I work on anything.

I'm unrelenting and I'm compassionate. These things are true.

My rate is $40/hour, which tracks the prevailing rate as listed by the EFA.

If it's a school paper, that's different, as follows:
For school papers I charge $3/page for a light edit and $4/page for a medium edit.
Light editing: I look for typos and mechanical stuff that's definitely broken—spelling, punctuation, grammar, capitalization, wrong word usage, inconsistent word usage, etc.
Medium editing: I also point out confusing constructions, awkward word choices, murky/confusing paragraphs, flow issues, and clarity problems, very often suggesting ways to fix them.
A page here means 250 words.
Let me know if the paper needs to conform to a specific style guide. (If one isn't specified I'll orbit the Chicago Manual of Style.)

Email me if you've got a manuscript or document you think could use a careful eye. I will need to do a brief sample edit to get a rough idea of how much time the work may take. Copy and paste a 750-1,000-word excerpt into its own Word document and attach the sample to your email. I'll get back to you as soon as I can. (It's a good idea to include the word "EDITING" in all caps in the subject line to help me see your email right off.)

Hope I can help.
