telecommuting okay

We're seeking freelance writers with a love of smart home tech and gadgetry. This is a daily gig (telecommute unless you live in NYC or Portland, OR and want to come into the office), and we'd like it to become a consistent, long-term working relationship if we're satisfied with your work.

Right now, we're hunting for a writer to contribute to our smart home tech section. Each day, you'll write 1-2 articles on subjects like the latest products available, how to buy a dishwasher, the best smart light bulbs, and tips and gadgets for growing an indoor garden. We're also in need of writers willing to write reviews of chosen products. If chosen, you will write helpful articles of all types, including how-to guides, roundups of accessories, tips guides, hacking guides, bug fix roundups, rumor roundups, and fun articles for our readers on social media channels like Facebook. The ability to research, source, and find the best advice or products for every situation is a must.

The ideal candidate already has considerable experience writing and fact checking online, consistent time each day to write at least one guide, and the drive to dive right into creating publishable content with minimal training. The ability to turn around airtight copy quickly and reliably while using excellent editorial judgment is crucial. As part of your posts, you will find and secure relevant images, video, and other media to draw readers in and keep them there. Your sources will include media from manufacturers, official releases, stock photography, and more. Experience with AP Style and WordPress is a plus.

In time, a solid candidate may also earn the option to write news posts, do live reporting, review products, and contribute regular articles / columns based on hot topics. Compensation starts at $35-100 per article, depending on the amount of research and time involved.

To apply, send:
• A cover letter with the following info: your background, your areas of interest/experience in tech, and
your availability.
• A resume with relevant tech writing or journalism experience.
• Writing samples: 3 published clips of your writing.
• Other relevant links: Add a link to your LinkedIn profile or your portfolio.

In lieu of published clips, you may also choose to write the following assignment: Write up a list of 5 tips and tricks on how to make the most of your Philips Hue light bulbs. It should be something like this:

***Do not apply unless you have experience writing online tech guides and can write several hours each
week. You must know how to fact check, create basic header images for a story, and be self-driven to
start new projects.
  • Principals only. Recruiters, please don't contact this job poster.
