This certainly caught my eye the other day when I was out shopping.
Those transformer-like legs. The clunky look to it. The funky carved scene under the glass top. All the details that are so not cohesive.
All that to say, I love it!
I have done some research and it appears this kind of handiwork was done sometime in the 1960's in Germany. There are tables and wall art and trays in this same style.
The scene under the glass is made in sections. The carved wood has a painted background then elements, like the trees and the buildings are glued [?] over that. So the scene is 3-dimensional. Then a glass top over that.
There are small flaws, a bit of veneer is missing in the inside ledge is the table, some small debris inside around the mountain, and some little dings in the wood here and there. Just stuff that happens to utilitarian furniture over the course of 60+ years.
Sturdy? Oh yes!
This measures about 19" tall, 26" long and 17.5" wide.
I wonder what kind of person bought this as a souvenir of their travels. Somehow a heavy drinking salesman on a vacation he won selling cars or Amway comes to mind. Or his wife won the trip selling Tupperware. Ya never know. You buy it and you can make up your own story.
